Very Necessary to Know Before Visiting Jamaica
Thinking of visiting Jamaica?
During the pandemic, I became very active on TikTok like many people all over the world. I didn't want my content to be empty (as a matter of fact, I explained that in my first TikTok post). I was leaning towards my post being somewhat entertaining, but very informative and I can honestly say I have maintained that for close to a year. My TikTok handle is "Deeopt6", go on; give me a follow.
I started talking about being a Jamaican, growing up in Jamaica, and sometimes compare and contrasting between living in Jamaica and the USA. My followers usually have many different questions as many are intrigued by the difference in cultures. Even my Jamaican followers are sometimes surprised by the difference between people from the different parishes.
There is always someone telling a story of their experience visiting Jamaica, or getting excited about their first visit. Then some have to visit the island on their bucket list. Whichever it is, it always makes me happy. Nonetheless, I get many questions about what to know, where to go, where is safe and the list goes on. With that being said, this blog post is Very Necessary.
Be Safe
Jamaica is very beautiful and offers stunning beaches, jaw-dropping waterfalls, delicious food, and warm locals; and is a favorite destination for many travelers. Jamaica like many other tourist destinations has its fair share of crime, therefore you are encouraged to be safe by making prior arrangements through trustworthy sources. Many visitors to Jamaica will likely choose resorts for their accommodation as this is known to be the safest practice, it has been for years.
See Jamaica Like the Locals
While I totally encourage resort reservations, I strongly believe that the best way to enjoy Jamaica is local. By local I mean, visiting Jamaica with a Jamaican. Not just any Jamaican, because I am 100% aware that not all Jamaicans know Jamaica fully. I suggest a Jamaican that knows their way around, are "Jamaican street smart" and it is a plus if they drive or can drive in Jamaica.
My friends usually visit with me and they have a blast. All my friends that I've ever taken to jamaica, know and enjoy Jamaica better than many locals. Hence, if you haven't as yet, get yourself a Jamaican friend before you visit. I'm thinking of a friend you may know personally, not just online (but if you choose to do that, be safe). Personally, my friends and I rent AirBnB' and a car whenever we visit, this way our transportation and shelter are secured.
Things to Know
Now let's talk about things to know before you visit. First thing first, Jamaica is tropical so pack for that, the most you may need is a jeans jacket or a light cardigan if that. It just depends on where you are staying, the time of year you visit, and how late you will be out. Drive on the left in Jamaica, please.
Although U.S. dollars are accepted almost everywhere in Jamaica, I strongly suggest having some Jamaican dollars (especially if you are living locally) My suggestion is to visit an ATM when you land at the airport or use the airport Cambio. I'm sure this won't be an issue if you visit with your Jamaican friends, they will know exactly what to do. Never keep all your money together in one place. When you go to make a purchase, never take out and or fumble around with a stack of money.
It's nice to make plans if they're certain places you really want to visit unless you will be there long-term. This is necessary since you may have to drive a couple hours to your desired destination. A trip to a certain destination may last all day, therefore you may only be able to complete one activity/excursion for the day. Unless they are nearby (again planning will give you a better approach to such things).
If you like to smoke on that bob, Jamaica is a great place to enjoy it. It's legal to smoke and or have up to 56.6 grams of weed in your possession for personal use. It is not a practice in Jamaica to puff puff pass, weed isn't short there. Don't be surprised to see it being sold in the common areas you may visit.
The Vibes in Jamaica is laid- back, therefore, you can forget the rush, rush, rush. The truth is, some days the plans you have will turn out differently, so just relax. Eat from the street vendors, try new things, shop at the supermarket and run a boat at your Airbnb, drink the tap water, especially if you are in the rural areas.
LGBTQ travelers should be cautious with PDA and expressing sexual orientation to strangers as it is frown upon by most Jamaicans (especially men). This is usually shameful for me to mention but I have to be honest. I've noticed that walking close, maybe holding hands or an arm on the should doesn't draw much attention, but I would say, refrain from kissing and making out with your partner in public. Be careful lusting and or flirting with local men unless you are sure they are gay.
Relax and Have Fun
I will wrap by telling you some good parishes I think you should visit. I will also do part 2 of this post letting you know what to do in these parishes. In the meantime, parts in rural Jamaica that have some great spots are Portland, St Thomas, St Elizabeth, and St Anns.
This post is focused on the fact that you are visiting Jamaica locally (meaning you are not staying at a resort) It is also based on the fact that you are visiting with a friend who knows their way around and you guys will have a rental car. If you have to walk on the street, watch out for cars, and if you have to ride the bus especially in the cities, keep your bag in front of you (not on your back or on your side especially if it contains valuables).
